What are the installation methods and precautions for angular contact ball bearings?

Angular contact ball bearings are of vital importance in mechanical systems. They can ensure that the equipment operates more smoothly and efficiently, and are key components for guaranteeing the performance of the equipment. So, what are the installation methods and precautions for angular contact ball bearings? Let's take a look together!

There are mainly the following four installation methods for angular contact ball bearings:

  1. Back-to-back installation (DB combination): The wide end faces of the two bearings are installed opposite to each other. The contact angle lines of the bearings spread in the direction of the rotation axis, which can increase their radial and axial support angular rigidity, and the anti-deformation ability is the greatest. This installation method is suitable for bearing relatively large axial loads and impact loads.
  2. Face-to-face installation (DF): The narrow end faces of the two bearings are installed opposite to each other. The contact angle lines of the bearings converge towards the direction of the rotation axis, and its support angular rigidity is relatively small. Since the inner ring of the bearing extends out of the outer ring, when the outer rings of the two bearings are pressed together, the original clearance of the outer ring is eliminated, and the preload of the bearing can be increased. This installation method is suitable for bearing relatively small axial loads and impact loads.
  3. Tandem arrangement installation (DT combination): The wide end faces of the two bearings are installed in one direction. The contact angle lines of the bearings are in the same direction and parallel, which can make the two bearings share the working load in the same direction. However, when using this installation form, in order to ensure the axial stability of the installation, the two pairs of bearings arranged in tandem must be installed oppositely at both ends of the shaft.
  4. Free combination installation (DU combination): This installation method is relatively flexible and can be adjusted according to specific working conditions and usage requirements.
The following precautions should also be noted when installing angular contact ball bearings:

  1. The bearing installation should be carried out in a dust-free and clean room. The bearings should be carefully selected, and the bearing spacers should be ground. On the premise of keeping the inner and outer ring spacers at the same height, the parallelism of the spacers should be controlled within 1μm.
  2. The bearings should be cleaned thoroughly before installation. When cleaning, the slope of the inner ring should face upward, and it should feel flexible by hand without any sense of stagnation. After drying, put in the specified amount of grease.
  3. Special tools should be used for bearing installation to ensure uniform force application, and knocking is strictly prohibited. An equal pressure should be applied on the circumference of the end face of the ring to press the ring in. Do not directly strike the end face of the bearing with tools such as a hammer to avoid damaging the bearing.
  4. In the case of a small interference fit, at room temperature, a sleeve can be used to press against the end face of the bearing ring, and a hammer can be used to strike the sleeve to evenly press the ring in through the sleeve. When installing in large quantities, a hydraulic press can be used. When pressing in, it should be ensured that the end face of the outer ring is tightly pressed against the shoulder end face of the housing, and the end face of the inner ring is tightly pressed against the shoulder end face of the shaft, and no gap is allowed.
  5. When the interference fit is large, the installation method of heating the angular contact ball bearings by oil bath or inductor can be adopted. The heating temperature range is 80°C - 100°C, and it should not exceed 120°C. At the same time, the bearing should be fastened with a nut or other appropriate methods to prevent a gap from occurring between the ring and the shaft shoulder due to the shrinkage of the bearing in the width direction after cooling.
  6. After the angular contact ball bearings are installed, the clearance should be adjusted. The clearance value should be specifically determined according to different working conditions and the magnitude of the interference fit of the mating parts. If necessary, tests should be carried out to determine it.
After reading the above introduction, everyone will no longer be unfamiliar with the question of what the installation methods and precautions for angular contact ball bearings are. Choosing the appropriate installation method and paying attention to the details during the installation process can extend the service life of angular contact ball bearings and improve the efficiency of mechanical use.
